The most important thing to prolonging life is to avoid the worst three: tobacco 7 years, obesity 5 years, and recreational drugs 3 years. Lifestyle
is important, thus for example, Seventh Day Adventists life on an average 2 years longer, they are vegetarians, but they also
less like to do the worst 3. Those who feel better physically at middle age are
less like to do the worst three.
There are two sides to measuring life, one of duration the other of quality. Those things that improve quality also improve longevity. For
a number of reasons, to complex to set out here, hormone replacement contributes to quality of life. For quality of life, vigorous exercise is best; however, this should be augmented with either female hormones or male hormones. In fact it seems that women, since there testosterone
level drop past menopause, that they would benefit with a restoration of this hormone to a youthful level. Vigorous exercise improves both quality and longevity
a Finish study shows. A very marked reduction in coronary death
of 65% for 2009 Finish male athletes who competed in international competition between 1920 and 1965 in either running or
cross country skiing, and died between 1971 and 1995. Moreover, this group, compared
to the general populace experience only 108 deaths versus an expected 189, a reduction of 57%.
This study does not consider lifestyle as a contravening variable—like most other studies. Vigorous exercise before the age of 30 is the best.
Aging has many causes, most prominent
are: (1) the reduction in performance of the mitochondria due to reactive chemicals
produced therein; (2) the braking of hydrogen bonds especially the cystine to an adjacent hydrogen, which causes a modification
of the shape of polypeptides and proteins; and (3) senescence. By making the mitochondria work less (being 25% below thin
body weight) a number of animal studies have yielded an increase in the life expectancy of about 25%, thought not in maximal life expectancy. To date there has been no convincing demonstration of chemical intervention to slow
these processes down. Claims to the contrary are so common that a group of prominent
scientists went public. Vigorous exercise, an aspirin a day, avoiding the deadly three, and hormone replacement are the best ways to extend life
and improve its quality.
