THE  JUGGERNAUT

Sonnet version

The bull bolts through the open thill

into the arena, stops and surveys scene.

Before the beast, a destiny to fulfill:

a branderillero with cape ready for routine,

a picador on padded horse by wall,

and a matador pensively waiting for his call.

The show a thousand times repeated here:

passes with cape, piercing with lance, then pics.

Having judged the beast, the matador draws near,

the bull who smells the death in dirt, then kicks,

readied for death, the drama ends in cheers,

like the passion of the crucifix.

A Sunday celebration for the throng,

as the juggernaut of culture slowly rolls along.
