“The pharmaceutical industry is the most lucrative, the most cynical and the least ethical of all the industries," Dr. Philippe Even tells The Guardian. "It is like an octopus with tentacles that has infiltrated all the decision-making bodies:  world health organizations, government agencies, parliaments, high administrations in health and hospitals and the medical profession."  Guide Des 4,000 Medicaments by Drs. Evan & Debre, Sept. 2012
For by interview by Dr Evans member of Parliament and Dr. Bernard Debre head of the prestigious Necker  Institute in Paris.  They are particularly harsh about lipid-regulating statins and have singled out 58 drugs, that are used for a wide range of conditions, like diabetes and osteoporosis, which they claim are outright dangerous.

The first essay is a beacon upon the bad pharma process.  For confirmation of the corruption worked by pharma, start with Harvard Professor Marcia Angell , her President’s Lecture at the University of Montana; and for links to videos and books on bad pharma, and related issues of health, including the role of diet in disease and obesity.

There is an alarming laxity in the production of research, education of public and doctors, and standards of FDA approval for drugs, as well as the monitoring of safety and effectiveness of drugs.  A link to 2 chapters of the best book on how big PHARMA deceives us and much more by Doctor Marcia Angell (Harvard Professor and former editor of New England Journal of Medicine)

A thought experiment:  Think like the Pfizer CEO (a marketing expert whose job review by his board of directors is based upon your maximization of quarterly profits).   You know how to work Pfizer-friendly FDA.  New drugs are  approved based on a phase III trials showing in a select young population some SHORT-TERM benefit for their condition (compared to nothing at all, a sugar pill); they have the least side effects.  You then expand usage on the basis of testing with junk marketing science in “phase IV studies”.  Your marketing department edits the results to be published.  The journals never receive the raw data, thus you manipulate the result to promote sales.  Your pay noted experts to educate doctors in required continuing education class about the benefits for these newly discovered off-label usages.  Your sales reps repeat the message.  Such claims based on junk science are protected by the Free Speech Clause of the Constitution.  No FDA approval for the new usage is needed if your company doesn’t advertise the new usage.  Over 70% of Pfizer's sales are for off-label usages.  You purchase prescribing records of doctors from data mining companies so that you can funnel thousands of dollars for “services” to doctors who push your drugs.  You schmooze with “donations” politicians, regulators, health care administrators, medical schools, and medical organizations—money well invested.  For example, The American Heart Association establishes treatment guidelines based on the junk science of Pfizer and others.  Civil courts plus administrators in hospitals and clinics pressure the doctors to follow those guidelines.  You also mount advertising blitzes to educate the public about Pfizer’s drugs that will be taken long-term.  In these 30 second TV educationals, you exaggerate disease risks, hype benefits, and merely list risks as required by the FDA.  Your company will reward you with millions in stock options.  See Side Effects and Marketing Science for an “ad nausea” account of pharma.  All this is confirmed by Harvard Prof.  Marcia Angell in The Truth About Drug Companies.

Positive bias averaged 32% (range 11 to 69%) in a NEJM article, 2008.  The study of neuroleptic drugs made a comparison of 74 journal articles to the raw data which was obtained by FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) from the FDA.
