A reading of Goodman & Gilman, their current (11^th Ed.) Pharmacology text on HRT; it was void of the issues surrounding WHI as far as limits on its findings due to Prempro and in particular the effect of MPA on causing various health issues, the positive effects of progesterone, that MPA is distinguished from progesterone.  It explained estrogen’s positive effect upon preventing osteoporosis, and estrogen's failure to ad significiant bone mass (thus necessitating the use of bisphosphonates), and the authors added the cautionary statement “the majority of fractures in postmenopausal period occur in women without a prior history of osteoporosis” at 1553.   Given the overall material in this section, it must be read as opposing the use of HRT or estrogen for preventing the various medical conditions, and totally ignoring the fact that esterified estrogen and progesterone ought to be taken by all women starting at the beginning of menopause and continued thereafter.  

I can only conclude that those who write the chapters is this and other pharmacology textbooks are opinion makers in their field who have a relationship with Big PhARMA--a topic which I have repeated broached in despairing over the destruction of medical science.    Conditions are much different that when I bought my first copy of Goodman & Gilman in 1987, and they won’t change until we have a government that does not depend on big businesses for election funding and corporate media endorsements.
